Phree: The Write Anywhere Device

For those who are artists, of any variety, you know that ideas come at all times of the day and night, and you don’t always have a pen and paper around to jot them down.

Even if you do, those post-its or scraps of napkin can get lost or forgotten and there really isn’t an easy way to transfer those stray ideas to your devices.

That is where Phree comes in. Now you can write anywhere (and in multiple languages)!

With Phree, your words and sketches instantly appear on the screen of the devices you use regularly.

Let’s have a look in more detail at this ‘Write Anywhere Device’.

Phree: How It Works

Phree’s three-dimensional optical tracking engine precisely measures your motion and sends digital ink to any Bluetooth device, as long as it is within a few meters.

All your writing and sketches show up in your handwriting just like with any normal pen or pencil.

Our handwriting is one of the most personal things about us and now we are able to use it again instead of constantly typing.

Phree can trace anyone’s handwriting due to the optical tracking engine.

Your handwriting can also be used a form of biometric identification, making it much harder for someone to steal your identity. In this day and age, that is so important.

But, guess what? There’s more.

You can also write and draw on any surface! Since there is no actual ink, you can draw on your desk, your arm, your dashboard, a pillow, or your phone screen and it will all appear in the app of your choosing instantly!

Phree minimizes whatever is standing in the way of you creating your next masterpiece. No more excuses to procrastinate.

Phree uses their patented Optical Translation Measurement (OTM) sensor to see the motions you make with your hand, using lasers.

OTM tracks the motion you make on whatever surface you are writing or drawing on by measuring the signal that is picked up between the laser beam pointed at the surface and the reflections from the surface. The signal is then put through Phree’s algorithms and captures your hand motions to recreate your handwriting.

And don’t worry about the laser sensor; it is safe for your eyes at any distance and is actually similar to what’s found in an optical mouse.

Phree also has a touch display for notifications that you can reply to instantly, and it even works as a headset to take phone calls while you’re working or when you’re on the go.

Need to write down a note quickly or jot down a phone number in a meeting or during a phone call? Phree is right at your fingertips to write and save whatever you need.

Pens and pencils are universally known for being uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time (ask any writer). Phree is ergonomically designed to fit in your hand. No matter if you are right or left-handed, the screen will light up to let you know if you have any notifications and face you, so you can easily select the different functions available.

Phree also has an open platform, so any of you developers out there are able to create new applications as well!

Additionally, Phree works on almost all major phone, tablet, and PC operating systems, including Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Phree also supports most apps on including Office, OneNote, EverNote, Photoshop, Acrobat, Sketchbook, Google Handwriting Keyboard, Viber, Skitch and many more.

You should be all ready to create your next masterpiece or jot down important notes as soon as you take your Phree out of the box.

Every Phree also comes with a protective cap that works as a stylus for all your touch screen devices. You can also purchase a case for your Phree. The case serves as a stand for your mobile phone as well as providing a wireless charging option (you will need an external wireless charging pad for this).

And don’t worry about going out to buy pricey batteries every month, Phree runs on a rechargeable battery that last anywhere between 2-7 days depending on how much you use it, and it charges fully in about an hour.

All you have to do is charge it through the USB port on your Phree or by using an external wireless charging pad if you choose to get the case.

Phree also comes with a six-month standard commercial warranty if you should have any problems.

Development

The people behind Phree spent thousands of hours developing the motion-tracking engine that makes this device possible. Because of them, now you can write, sketch, annotate, and express yourself on almost any surface (maybe don’t write on your dog)..

Phree has already been featured in multiple publications, including Wired, CNET, Computer World, Yahoo Tech, Vogue, NBC News, Popular Science, Huff Post Marie Claire, Buzzfeed, GQ, Reuters, and many more.

Phree ran an IndieGoGo campaign and raised over $1.5 million dollars, but are still looking for more capital in order to start production. Phree is likely to cost between $249 – $299 (depending on if you want a case) when it makes it to retail.
